THE EFFECTS OF PROGESTIN ON HEARING IN OLDER WOMEN

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is commonly used by older women, but the relationship with hearing loss has been unclear until recently. A study conducted at the Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in September 2006 concluded that "Progestin negatively affects hearing, whereas estrogen does not". The investigators recommended that effects on sensory abilities, including hearing, should be part of drug testing: "Sensory declines in elderly women can significantly interfere with communication abilities, family relations and quality of life".

Other research has found that hearing loss is one of the most common conditions in older women, yet it usually goes undetected and untreated. Hearing loss often develops so gradually that the individual does not notice any changes.

If you or someone you know is experiencing hearing loss, a simple audiological evaluation is needed. Please call my office at 770-425-1095 to schedule an appointment. Most insurance accepted.
