RESEARCH FINDS LINK BETWEEN DIABETES AND HEARING LOSS

The first large-scale study on the relationship between diabetes and hearing loss has been completed at the University of Maryland. More than 65,000 patients were used for the study. Of those patients, 12,575 had diabetes. Patients were age-matched and given hearing evaluations.

The researchers concluded that individuals with diabetes are 30% more likely to have hearing loss and that "Severity of hearing loss seemed to correlate with progression of disease as reflected in serum creatinine. This may have been due to microangiopathic disease in the inner ear". The report further concluded that patients with diabetes should be screened for hearing loss and that patients who better control their diabetes may also reduce the likelihood or severity of hearing loss.

If you or someone you know has diabetes and has not had a hearing evaluation, now is the time to do so. Simply call my office at 770-425-1095 to schedule an appointment.
